The National Urban League (NUL) believes that progressive housing policy shares a direct and intractable link to any and all meaningful economic development. Because a healthy job market and a vibrant housing market go hand-in-hand, NUL strongly believes in preserving the possibility of qualified middle class homeownership as the bedrock foundation of the American Dream. As a result, NUL and our affiliates focus on policies that promote informed homeownership, affordable rental options, and the development of healthy, economically strong communities.

The National Urban League believes that educational opportunity and economic empowerment are inextricably linked. A child that receives an excellent education is better prepared to attend college, enter the workforce and contribute to society. Our vision, to Ensure every American child is prepared for college, work, and life, guides our work in education policy.

The National Urban League’s education policy priorities were released in the Educate, Employ and Empower plan. Our work focuses on these areas.

Why Give?

The Great Recession has taken a particularly heavy toll on the lives of African Americans, literally tens of thousands of whom have lost their jobs, homes and life savings. An economic crisis of such epic magnitude calls for new thinking, and dramatically effective programs and policies. The National Urban League is uniquely poised to help by having been engaged in urban communities as an agent for positive change for over 100 years.
