Woman Saves Her Home Thanks to Louisville Urban League

Deanna Sims visited our Louisville affiliate on March 12, 2018, concerned about how she would pay for her April mortgage. She was a divorced 48 year old mother raising her child with no savings, and with child support that was close to running out. She lived in a rural area, and she was unable to find work after being laid off from Humana, where she’d been for 10 years. Her unemployment benefits had recently run out, and she also faced new health problems that required her to receive a kidney transplant.

Our Louisville housing counselor recommended that Ms. Sims complete an application with the Kentucky Housing Corporation Unemployment Bridge program. She filled out the application on March 12th and by March 28th our counselor received notice that Ms. Sims had been approved for a $15,000 UBP loan with no interest and no payments! The UPB loan would go directly to her servicer to pay her mortgage until the full $15,000 was spent or up to 12 months – whichever came first.

The next day Ms. Sims alerted our counselor that her kidney transplant had been approved and scheduled for April 5, 2018 in Lexington, KY. Thankfully, our counselor was able to share with Ms. Sims that she had been approved for the UBP loan and would not need to worry about her mortgage until she was able to work again after the surgery. She was relieved to hear the news and thanked the counselor for all of her help.
