Thanks to a grant from the Ford Foundation, the Policy Institute’s civic engagement initiative, Project Advocate, has been hard at work educating and motivating voters on their rights and registering eligible citizens in five key states—Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia and Virginia—in the run up to the presidential election. Tonight is the first of three scheduled debates between President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

Political scientists say that in the last half-century, political debates have rarely made an impact on election outcomes. Because candidates tend to be evenly matched in terms of capability, preparation, and political experience, neither is likely to be able to dominate the other enough to sway undecided voters. Even if polls shift during a debate period, experts say, it can be hard to determine whether the debates were the cause.
