New York, NY (April 17, 2012) -- President and CEO of the National Urban League, Marc H. Morial, today issued the following statement regarding the announcement by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) that the group would disband its Public Safety and Elections task forces.
Special prosecutor Angela Corey yesterday filed a charge of second-degree murder against George Zimmerman, who shot and killed Trayvon Martin six weeks ago.
Without the efforts of activists and concerned Americans, the initial decision of Florida authorities not to charge Zimmerman likely would have been the end of the case. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has promised a thorough review of the case to determine whether any federal criminal civil rights crime was committed.
