WEBINAR:
Amplify Our Voices: Building African American Community Radio
African-American community radio has historically played an important role in supporting civil rights by providing an alternative to mainstream media, amplifying the voices of community leaders and offering exposure for music of African-American artists. Thanks to a recent legislative victory in media reform, nonprofits, schools, churches, and labor unions will soon have a one-time chance to apply for thousands of new FM community radio licenses nationwide. The deadline to apply for these free low-power FM radio licenses from the Federal Communications Commission is October 15, 2013. There is a lot to do before then.
Today, while people of color make up more than 36 percent of the U.S. population, we own only about 7 percent of all radio licenses and 3 percent of TV licenses. The upcoming low power FM licensing window is the biggest opportunity ever for people of color in the U.S. to own a piece of the broadcast airwaves. Increasing media consolidation has all but drowned out diverse voices, so the community radio initiative presents a tremendous opportunity to offer African-Americans a platform to air the issues affecting their community.
Join the National Urban League, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Prometheus Radio Project, and The Leadership Conference Education Fund for an exciting webinar to learn about the benefits of community radio and how you can start a station near you or support others to grab a slice of the airwaves.
