Springfield Urban League Hosts Literacy Initiative Night For Kids

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WRSP) — Children were able to learn more about the importance of reading at a literacy initiative Thursday night.  The inaugural event was for low-income pre-school students and their families.  Springfield's Urban League's Head Start Literacy Night focused on helping kids recognize letters and learning sounds.

Organizers said it was exciting to see children learning and having fun while doing so.

“In our early head start program from birth to three we are preparing them for school so it's very important so they can develop a love for reading, develop a love for language development, and it increases their readiness for school,” director of Springfield Urban League Head Start Betty Edwards said.

Others included Springfield Fire and Police Departments, Kathryn Harris a Historian formerly of Lincoln Library, State Representative Sue Scherer, Ameren servicepersons, and Clifford the Big Red Dog.
