Project Wellness Supports Pregnant Teens
K-Ann, a 19 year old young woman, began services in May receiving education on several topics including childbirth, breastfeeding, parenting, preterm labor signs, prenatal care, and also individual classes through Project Wellness Teen and TOTTS programthrough the Urban League of Broward County. When K-Ann began receiving services she stated one of her goals was to go back to school, but she was depressed because
she stated she couldn’t do it due to her having a baby and no child care. Staff encouraged her and assisted her in finding a school where she could take online classes and would be able to complete her business degree from home while caring for her newborn daughter.
Through the assessment it was discovered the family was experiencing financial difficulties and a Care Coordinator was able to assist the family with obtaining food stamps and Medicaid as well as obtaining health insurance through the Affordable Care Act for her mother and brother through the Urban League ACA program. K-Ann gave birth to a healthy baby girl and she has been an incredible mother all while studying, taking online business management classes and exclusively breastfeeding her daughter.
When she delivered her baby she did not have a crib or bassinet and staff was able to complete a referral for Cribs for Kids and get her a Pack N Play for the baby to have a safe place to sleep. Her daughter is now 11 months old and she continues to be an amazing mother and role model for others.
