Central Florida Urban League President Allie Braswell testified earlier this week at the first public hearing on the Stand Your Ground laws in Florida. Braswell also participated in a press conference organized by the Second Chance on Shoot First coalition, for which the National Urban League is an anchor organization. The Coalition used the gathering to present 375,000 petitions urging Governor Rick Scott to support a review of the current statute.
In his remarks during the hearing, at the press conference and in a live CNN interview, Braswell remarked that, prior to the Stand Your Ground passage in 2005, Florida already had a robust law that protected the right to self-defense. He called the current measure ambiguous and inconsistently enforced. Braswell also drew comparisons between the Stand Your Ground statute and the military rules of engagement, saying, “This law gives civilians greater leeway to shoot another person than soldiers on the battlefield. It’s time we took a serious look at the current statute, understand how flawed it is and take steps to return to a more common-sense law.”
