NEW YORK (May 31, 2012) -- The world’s largest retailer has struck a blow for justice and accountability by ending its relationship with a regressive and irresponsible lobbying group, National Urban League President Marc H. Morial said today.

A secretive policy organization, ALEC was the force behind “Shoot First” laws, also known as Stand Your Ground, which not only contributed to the slaying of Florida’s Trayvon Martin, but resulted in a spike of homicides throughout the country. ALEC also has promoted regressive voting laws which could disenfranchise 5 million Americans this year.
“We congratulate Wal-Mart and other groups that have ended their relationship with ALEC, including Coca-Cola, Kraft Foods, McDonald's, Procter & Gamble and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,” Morial said. “Their commitment to openness in the legislative process and inclusive democracy is an example we hope other organizations will follow.”
