President Morial Hosts CFPB Director Cordray at National Urban League Headquarters
On May 4, National Urban League President and CEO Marc Morial hosted Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Director Richard Cordray at NUL headquarters in New York. During the hour-long meeting, President Morial stressed the need for a fully operational CFPB and pledged the support of the National Urban League Movement in helping the new bureau accomplish its stated mission.The CFPB was created by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act of 2010. In addition to protecting American consumers in everyday monetary transactions, the bureau is also responsible drafting those rules that will guide the future of residential mortgage lending in America. The work done by the CFPB promises to touch the lives of most Americans, from the regulation of residential mortgages and the preservation of homeownership in America, to the oversight of bank checking accounts and overdraft fees. President Morial congratulated Director Cordray for his selection of Stuart Ishimaru to run the CFPB's Office of Minority and Women Inclusion (OMWI) and made clear the importance of the mission of the CFPB to our communities.
NULPI’s “Connecting the Dots” Broadband Study Gets Bi-Partisan Reception

NUL was represented by President Morial and NULPI staffers, Chanelle Hardy, Valerie Wilson and Madura Wijewardena. Attendees heard remarks from Chairman of the FCCJulius Genachowski;both Republican and Democratic Commissioners, Robert McDowell and Mignon Clyburn; and former FCC Chairman, Michael Powell, who was appointed by President George W. Bush. Also taking part in a panel discussion were Fernando Laguarda, from Time Warner Cable; Josh Gottheimer with the FCC; and Allie Braswell, CEO of the Central Florida Urban League.
The nearly 100 policymakers, staffers and officials heard a robust discussion on how private enterprise, community organizations and governments can work together to do this in underserved communities. The event was carried live on C-SPAN2. Other press in attendance included journalists from political news providers Politico, The Hill and National Journal. The event was also covered in Bloomberg News, the Kanas City Star, Communications Daily and Multichannel News.
