Justice for Trayvon – It’s Not Over Yet
NEW YORK (July 17, 2013) – On Saturday, we were stunned by the outrageous not-guilty verdict reached by a jury of six women in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. We have been following this case since February 26, 2012 – the day unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon, who was Black, was gunned down by George Zimmerman, a white-Hispanic Sanford, Florida neighborhood watch captain.
Letter to the Department of Justice Regarding the Trayvon Martin Case
NEW YORK (July 14, 2013) – In light of the acquittal in the trial of George Zimmerman for the killing of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin, the undersigned organizations commend the decision by the Department of Justice to keep its investigation open while working to determine whether civil rights statutes were violated and whether federal prosecution is appropriate. Further, we beseech the Department to pursue such a federal criminal civil rights investigation to the fullest extent.
Statement from Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League, on the Trayvon Martin Trial Verdict
NEW YORK (July 14, 2013) – This is a sad moment for our nation. The not guilty verdict in the trial of George Zimmerman has extended the tragedy of Trayvon Martin’s death to a travesty and miscarriage of justice. While we must accept the jury’s decision under the due process of the legal system, we want to make it clear that this is far from over. We are focusing on two important aspects of federal law which may have been violated by George Zimmerman and which should be investigated, with the potential to lead to an additional indictment and another trial.
