NUL AOE Conference Call with Department of Housing and Urban Development re: State Attorneys Generals Mortgage Servicing Settlement
On Thursday March 15, a number of NUL affiliate CEOs and programming staff dialed into a Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) conference call explaining the recent Mortgage Servicing Settlement with the nation's 5 largest mortgage lenders. This interactive call allowed NUL affiliates throughout the country to join over 300 community based non-profit staffers in a public conversation with Damon Smith from the Office of the General Counsel at HUD. Smith was instrumental in negotiating the agreement, and was a featured speaker at the NUL HUD Agency meeting during our recent Legislative Policy Conference in Washington.
The Mortgage Servicing settlement filed in federal court on March 12 will provide more than $25 billion to the attorneys general of 49 states for the purposes of remedial payments for those borrowers foreclosed upon without due process, as well as other preventative measures including housing counseling and foreclosure mitigation. The settlement applies to selected mortgages serviced by Bank of America, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, Well Fargo, and Ally Financial, and is pending final approval in US Federal Court.
