National Urban League's Morial to the Super Committee: “Get the Job Done, Be Fair and Protect Low-Income Americans"
In light of this week’s failure of the Congressional Debt Reduction ‘Super Committee’ to reach a compromise solution to the nation’s debt crisis, the National Urban League is urging the respective parties to deliver an “effective and balanced debt-reduction package that does not place disproportionate burdens on middle class, low-income and poor Americans.”
The bipartisan congressional super- committee was originally tasked with identifying an additional $1.2 to $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction above and beyond those cuts already made in the April 2011 Continuing Resolution agreement, and the subsequent August 2011 debt ceiling increase agreement.
In a public call for rationale and fair-minded leadership, NUL President and CEO Marc H. Morial explained, “We want to see an effective, balanced and fair result that includes revenue increases and spending cuts. On spending cuts, there must be a balance between both defense and non-defense discretionary and entitlement spending. The outcome must maintain the underlying objectives of entitlement programs and maintain the effectiveness of discretionary programs that provide crucial support social services to families and children, as well as community development block grants, job training, Pell Grants and housing counseling which are critically important to low-income Americans. If automatic cuts are triggered none of this will be achieved.”
