The Contest

The National Urban League (NUL) is committed to tackling the challenges that we all face in this area.  Moreover, we know that some of the best and freshest solutions will come from young citizens. The current environmental challenges that we as a people, as a society, as a nation and as a global community are facing are HUGE and require solutions that are both BIG and small to solve.  It will require input of one and all. This student video contest is co-sponsored by American Electric Power Foundation, based in Columbus, Ohio.

We asked students to submit videos demonstrating an effort or initiative started in their community or school to improve the environment or tackle pollution. The subject of the video can be about, but not limited to, one of the following items relating to advancing the green movement:

  1. Reducing their carbon footprint (via thoughtful shopping choices, transportation choices etc.)
  2. Teaching people about possible new and renewable sources of energy
  3. Starting a campaign or petition drive promoting saving/ conserving energy (current sources – gasoline, natural gas, electricity, etc.)
  4. Practical ways to incorporate new/ alternative or renewable sources of energy into people’s daily lives
  5. Practical ways to incorporate improving energy efficiency around the home
  6. Increasing and promoting recycling
  7. Promoting ways people can eat more “local” healthy foods
  8. Starting a community garden
  9. Participating in local food co-ops
  10. Any science project relating to a green and sustainable environment

Judging

Judging is based on the following criteria:

  • journalistic quality
  • visual style
