National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial issued the following statement in recognition of the one-year anniversary of health reform passage – “This week marks the one-year anniversary since passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. “Because of this transformative legislation, 1.2 million young adults have access to health insurance through the option of remaining remain on their parents’ health plan until they are 26 years of age. In addition, four million small businesses are now eligible to receive tax credits so they can provide their employees with adequate health care Also, another four million seniors are already getting much needed assistance with their prescription drugs.
“African-Americans are almost twice as likely to lack health insurance as whites, making it is critical that we continue to defend the law and work to reduce health disparities for communities of color. “Over the past year, we have seen unsuccessful attempts to repeal the health care law in Congress, as well as in the courts. Despite these attempts to derail implementation of the law, we continue to see strong support for moving forward with full implementation and enforcement. Common sense tells us that returning to a system which does not cover the most vulnerable is absolutely unacceptable. We hope Congressional leaders will not take us backward, and will instead show consistent commitment to improving the new healthcare law.”
