NEW YORK (January 18, 2011) -- National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial today issued the following statement against the repeal of the Affordable Care Act:
“Repealing this hard-fought law would be unconscionable by denying 31 million more men, women and children the ability to seek medical care when they need it,” Morial said. “This bill also ignores the realities facing the American people who are currently going without needed health care in their local communities. The Affordable Care Act will help to reduce these disparities for African Americans who are roughly twice as likely to be uninsured as the rest of the population.
“And let’s be clear. This health reform law does not kill jobs or weaken the economy. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the Affordable Care Act will decrease the deficit by $143 billion over 10 years, while the repeal will increase the deficit by $230 billion by 2021. Since the beginning of the economic downturn, health care jobs have sustained growth over time and are projected to continue putting Americans back to work. Americans are looking to our leaders in the Congress to create, not cut jobs.“
