Life Expectancy Gap Between Blacks and Whites Narrows to All-Time Low
A recent study finds that the life expectancy gap between African Americans and whites is at an all time low, mostly because of declines in HIV death rates and improvements in preventing and treating heart disease.
Researchers at McGill University in Montreal found that overall life expectancy has improved since 2003, but at a slightly faster rate for blacks than for whites.
The life expectancy for black men in 2008 was 70.8 years, up from 68.8 years in 2003 but still well below the 76.2 years for white men (who had an average life span of 75.3 years in 2003), Harper and his colleagues found. Life expectancy for black women rose from 75.7 to 77.5 years, while the life span for white women grew from 80.3 years to 81.2 years.
Much of the narrowing has come from faster declines in mortality rates among blacks for things like heart disease, homicide and H.I.V. infection.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg plans to restrict the sale of sugar-sweetened beverages larger than 16 ounces. The Walt Disney Company will halt junk-food advertising to kids.
Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the last 30 years, with the percentage of obese children aged 6–11 years increasing from 7% in 1980 to nearly 20% in 2008. Mayor Bloomberg drew national attention with his proposal to restrict certain establishments in New York City from serving sugar-sweetened drinks in portions over 16 ounces. In a more far-ranging move, all products advertised on the Walt Disney company’s child-focused television channels, radio stations and Web sites must comply with a strict new set of nutritional standards. Researchers say sugar-sweetened beverages are the largest source of calories in the American diet.
