When Thomas P. first came to the Urban League of Greater New Orleans’ Urban Reentry Jobs Program, he was unemployed and living in the local halfway house. Urban League staff assisted him with honing his interview and computer literacy skills, which led to him attending a “Suits for Hire” job fair in March. He started working at the local Marriott, but with the possibility of homelessness still loomed over his head.
In an attempt to be proactive, Urban League staff linked him with community partner Total Community Action (TCA), because they have a housing assistance program for returning citizens which helps with rent for three months and initial utility deposits as long as the applicant remains employed. Thomas P. was recently released from the halfway house, and received the keys to his new apartment.
Today, Thomas P. is still gainfully employed at the Marriott, lives in his own apartment, and is bursting with pride over his recent accomplishments.
