Omaha.com: Omaha job-training program offers a foot in the door with prospective local employers

Darlene Thorpe had worked 16 years for a print shop when she was laid off last summer.
The world had changed in those years, and the 60-year-old grandmother found herself unemployed and out of step with the job-seeking skills needed today.
“Everything has changed,” she said as she took a break from a job-training program at the Urban League of Nebraska. “Now it’s all about the computer.”
And the job market, Thorpe said, is “terrible.”
The Urban League’s Career Boot Camp, begun in 2015, focuses on people like Thorpe: jobless Omahans with a demonstrated work history and nothing in their past that would prevent employment.
The four-week session brings participants up to speed with today’s job market, while using the Urban League’s relationships with local employers to help graduates find work.
