Urban League of Greater Atlanta Helps Members Get Smoke Free
On February 2, 2017, Nancy Flake Johnson, President of ULGA, presented the programs and services offered to communities throughout Greater Atlanta. Although this was not specifically an Empowered To Quit presentation, it was uplifting to see our President highlighting the impact and results we all work to achieve, whether through work, education, or health.
This was ULGA’s first Smoke Cessation group at Adamsville Green Senior Housing Residence with 11 participants. Through the support of the management Mercy Housing who has recently gone Smoke-Free at this facility, many attendees expressed interest. As an effort to support residents who continue to smoke on the property, the management has encouraged them to join our group every session. So far, 3 have quit smoking with 7 have consciously decreasing their intake.
In less than a week, ULGA hosted a tobacco usage informational in the Peachtree Center Mall food court during peak lunch hour time, the day before Kick Butts Day. Kick Butts Day is another CVS Health sponsored campaign focused on getting youth to quit smoking. We pasted out brochures and asked smokers to at least consider ‘kicking butts’ for 24-hours. Even with little time to prepare, this may have been one of the best-attended outreach efforts.
