Olivia, a 19 year old young woman, participated in the
Project Wellness program as a pregnant teen in March. When Olivia began the program she had no baby items, no education on childbirth, and no source of income.
She had begun receiving services while living in a maternity shelter for homeless teen mothers. Urban League staff provided education regarding childbirth, breastfeeding, parenting goal setting, preterm labor signs, prenatal care, and safe sleep. She gave birth to a healthy baby girl and she now practices safe sleep and exclusively breastfeeds her baby.
Her Care Coordinator was able to provide Olivia with gently used baby clothes for her daughter and diapers after she delivered. Through her goal setting and staff’s support and referrals, Olivia obtained her GED while participating in the program. She was also referred to the Center for Working Families at the Urban League of Broward County for employment, because she was about to lose her placement at the shelter due to not being able to find a job. After receiving services through the Urban League, Olivia has found a part time job at Publix and she will also begin working at a daycare center to stay near her daughter during the day.
Soon after finding employment and completing her GED, she was able to transition to the aftercare program at the maternity shelter. They will be able to assist her in saving money and getting her own apartment to become independent and to continue is able to provide for herself and her daughter.
