Julian, 18 years old, was 8 weeks pregnant when she enrolled
in Project Wellness. Julian did not have medical insurance or a medical provider when enrolled in the program. Urban League staff was able to work with the staff at the maternity shelter to ensure that she obtained Medicaid through assisting her with the application process and providing her with a list of prenatal doctors in her area. She was able to obtain prenatal care within 30 days of beginning Project Wellness. She received education in childbirth, breastfeeding, parenting goal setting, preterm labor signs, prenatal care, and safe sleep education. She didn’t have a crib for her baby but after receiving education about co sleeping she was referred to receive a Pack ‘n Play from Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies “Cribs for Kids” program. Julian completed a vision board during one of the educational sessions and she identified her future goals of completing high school in the summer and keeping herself and her baby healthy.
