From May 23-26, National Urban League staffers attended the 2016 National Association for Latino Community Asset Builders (NALCAB) National Training, Breaking Ground, in Dallas, Texas. The conference used a unique "train-the-trainer" format to provide nonprofit practitioners serving low-to-moderate income Latino and immigrant communities with best practices and emerging innovations in the field. The experiential learning and group discussions enhanced knowledge and led to a more interactive and meaningful experience. It also was an opportunity to network and learn more specifically about asset-building, affordable housing, small business development and financial capability in Latino communities. “The peer learning from innovative industry practitioners was extremely impactful,” said Ayanna Fortson (Director of Housing, NUL). “They were able to translate traditional financial tools from our communities to today’s economy. For example, adding education and credit reporting to the lending circles known in our African and Caribbean communities as ‘susus’ and in Latin American culture as ‘tandas,’ thus empowering our people using tools with which they are already familiar.”
Other Urban League staff attendees included Caron Washington (Manager of Entrepreneurship & Business Development, NUL), Selena Gray (Director of Entrepreneurship and Economic Development, the Los Angeles Urban League), Charolette Harris (District Director & Business Advisor, Ohio SBDC at the Greater Cincinnati Urban League), and Eric Goodie (Director of Asset Acquisition and Management/Entrepreneurship Center Director, the Houston Area Urban League).
