When Melissa D. came to the Buffalo Urban League for help saving her home, she was at her wit’s end. She had been laid off from her job and was working part-time at a cleaning service to make ends meet. Her income took a hit, and she started missing mortgage payments. She knew she would lose her home if she did not settle things with her lender.
At first, she tried working with the lender herself. She sent over all the required documents, but when she called to follow up the lender told her they never received them. She lost hope of ever saving her home. It was the most stressful time of her life.
Finally, when her lender sent her a list of HUD-certified agencies to contact for help, she chose the Buffalo Urban League. She worked with a housing coordinator who spoke to lenders and negotiated with them on her behalf. The housing coordinator also held lenders accountable for the documents they received from Melissa, preventing future mix-ups.
Five months after starting at the Buffalo Urban League, Melissa finally got a loan modification with her lender. They restructured it so that she could pay off her monthly mortgage payments on her current income. Not only was she able to pay off her mortgage, but they also reduced her interest rate from 7% to 3% and forgave $40,000 in debt.
Melissa felt incredibly relieved to have the Buffalo Urban League on her side and to stay in the home she loves.
