Jacksonville Urban League Entrepreneurship Center Assists Client with Non-Profit Status
As a referral from Wells Fargo Bank, one of the Jacksonville Urban League’s business partners, Janice Murphy, Owner of Women On A Mission Inc., a non-profit organization which provides HIV and AIDS education and supportive services to the community, contacted the Jacksonville Urban League Entrepreneurship Center for assistance with re-establishing her non-profit status with the IRS.
After years of successfully performing independent contract work for the Jacksonville Health Department, Janice Murphy was encouraged to establish herself as a non-profit organization and continue her ministry of providing service referrals to the community. As such, Ms. Murphy enlisted the assistance of a professional incorporator, who allegedly failed to inform Ms. Murphy on the method of maintaining her non-profit status. Subsequently, the 501(c)(3) status for Women On A Mission expired. The expiration of Women On A Mission’s non-profit status ended the organization’s ability to receive tax-deductible contributions and other funding. Currently, this funding is the only way that this organization can operate.
Jacksonville, Florida statistically ranks 9th in the country in new cases of HIV and AIDS. Ms. Murphy has dedicated her life to educating the public by going to parks, churches, sidewalks, and prisons to educate and provide supportive resource referrals to some of the most vulnerable.
With free and direct assistance from Thomas B. Waters, Director, Jacksonville Urban League Entrepreneurship Center, Women On A Mission, Inc. continues as a soldier in the quest to eliminate the stigmas and stop the spread of HIV by educating the community.
