How the Buffalo Urban League helped the Jones' Buy a Home
The Buffalo Urban League helped us get $3,000 to buy a home!
After Jeffrey and Retha Jones got married, the first thing they wanted was a home they could call their own. After renting apartments for years, buying a house was a milestone they wanted to reach together. Jeffrey and Retha couldn't wait to renovate bedrooms for their two children and paint the walls any color they wanted to.
When they started the home buying process, Jeffrey and Retha felt frustrated and confused. The bank forms were more complicated than they had expected. As part of their loan commitment, the bank required Jeffrey and Retha to enroll in a first time homebuyer class, and they decided to take it at the Buffalo Urban League.
By the time Jeffrey and Retha finished the day-long intensive course with Mr. Morales, a housing counselor at the Buffalo Urban League, they were surprised by how much more confident they felt. The UL counselor answered questions they did not even know they had about interest rates and credit scores, in addition to reviewing the requirements to get down payment assistance.
A month later, Jeffrey and Retha closed on their first home in Buffalo and received a $3,000 grant from the bank toward their loan. Now when they look at the bank documents, they do not feel overwhelmed and confused. Instead, they feel confident and prepared to manage their finances. Thanks to assistance from the Buffalo Urban League, Jeffrey and Retha made an investment in their family's future and have a home of their own.
