Houston Resident Buys 1st Home with Urban League’s Help
Thanks to the Urban League’s youth and adult programs, Michael P. was able to purchase his first home in the community in which he grew up.
Michael P III’s first experience with the Houston affiliate was in his younger years as a HAUL Project Ready NULITES participant. With the help of the program, this young African-American male graduated valedictorian, received a full scholarship to the University of Oklahoma, graduated with an engineering degree and became employed with a respected company as an engineer.
When he returned to the Urban League he was 25 years old, single and with no children, but he wanted to plan for the future. He attended HAUL's first time homebuyer workshop and was subsequently able to save for a down payment and closing costs, secure an FHA mortgage for $160,000 with interest rate of 4%, and receive mortgage credit certificate, allowing him to claim up to 20% of the annual mortgage interest paid. Soon after, he purchased his first home, completed repairs and moved in!
