Houston Area Urban League Gives Monique a Path to College
Monique S was referred to the Houston Area Urban League by Harris County Juvenile Probation as a potential candidate for the Urban Youth Empowerment Program (UYEP). For the first couple of months, it appeared that she would not be a good fit for the program. During this time, she remained in school while passing all courses and was compliant with terms of her probation. After aggressive follow-up and home visits, Monique reengaged in the program and completed several job readiness trainings. Soon, she was selected to participate in our subsidized work experience program and assigned to work at University Park Academy performing general office duties. Monique worked closely with the school administrators assisting with the daily programmatic functions of the school. Her attitude, customer service and soft skills improved while working which helped her overall self-esteem and confidence. During her first few weeks, it was difficult for her to accept criticism from staff, but her relationship with the principle helped her understand workplace culture and always be professional.
After the summer assignment, Monique returned to school for her senior year and obtained her high school diploma. In January 2016, Monique enrolled at Houston Community College where she will pursue her degree in Criminal Justice. UYEP provided tuition assistance for her first semester of college and is currently assisting her secure unsubsidized employment in Law Enforcement. With the help of the Urban League, Monique is sure to complete college and achieve her goal of working in law enforcement.
