About 200 students — mostly ninth-graders — from Omaha Public Schools and a couple Omaha parochial schools participated in the seventh annual event, which was a collaborative effort of the Urban League of Nebraska, 100 Black Men of Omaha and African-American Empowerment Network, said Thomas Warren, president and CEO of the Urban League. It was the summit’s second year at the MAC.
Focus areas included defining success, overcoming obstacles and options for higher education and careers, Warren said. There were 50 professionals from business, government, education, faith and other organizations there to distribute information on community resources and opportunities.
“The purpose of the event is just to get these ninth-graders seriously thinking about their futures,” said Michael Cich-Jones, director of development and marketing for the Urban League.
