Facebook is pledging to train 1 million people and small business owners across the U.S. by 2020, the social media giant announced Friday (June 8th).
Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg will discuss Facebook's pledge at the U.S. Conference of Mayors being held in Boston. She will also participate in a fireside chat with Mayor Sylvester Turner and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh.
Turner was invited to participate in the conversation because Houston was the second city to get Facebook's Community Boost Program, said city of Houston spokesman Alan Bernstein. Turner planned to speak about how Community Boost is just one element of his efforts to position Houston as the next frontier for tech innovation.
Community Boost was a four-day public event where more than 950 people took part in training programs. Classes ranged from the basics, such as creating a Facebook page and learning about Facebook ads, to more in-depth topics of growing internationally or raising capital.
During the local event, Facebook also announced partnerships with the Houston Area Urban League (Houston, TX), Flatiron and BakerRipley. Facebook is giving scholarships to 25 Houstonians to attend a 15-week coding boot camp run by Flatiron.
