On Friday, March 20, 2015, the Urban League of Hampton Roads (Norfolk, VA) hosted a book signing and reception to celebrate the publication of “The History of the Urban League of Hampton Roads” written by Dr. Curtis T. Langley, Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Urban Affairs from Norfolk State University.
In the book, Mrs. Marquita B. Johnson states, “Dr. Curtis T. Langley’s work offers more than a chronology of strife, trial and challenge ... he has captured the progression and ‘song’ of those who gathered, organized and inspired men and women of Hampton Roads Virginia and nationally.”
Dr. Langley specialized in methodology, race and ethnic relations, urban affairs and social disorganization. Much of his research has focused on the issues related to the quality of life, youth crimes, equity and sensitivity, and race related issues of minorities in the Hampton Roads Region. It was because of Dr. Langley’s extensive background that Edith White, President/CEO of the Urban League of Hampton Roads asked Dr. Langley to write the history.
Ms. White states, “Our goal was to document the rich history of the Urban League of Hampton Roads and to acknowledge all of the individuals who helped establish this Urban League affiliate and the many persons who served as board members, volunteers, supporters and staff that ensured the organization thrived in order to make a positive difference in the lives of individuals and families in the community.”
For more than 36 years, the Urban League has provided over 20 programs focused on enhancing educational outcomes, providing job training, improving the quality of health and assisting individuals in building wealth though savings and homeownership.
