Frederick Douglass Distinguished Scholars at American University hold steadfast to a single mission: meet the needs and change the fates of everyday citizens in the most under-resourced, underserved areas of the world.
Bringing together the best of American University – world-class education, leadership development, and active citizenship – the Frederick Douglass Distinguished Scholars (FDDS) program will elevate the college-to-career experience of our most talented undergraduates and propel them into successful careers in government, law, business, communications, education, and international service.
The vision of the Frederick Douglass Distinguished Scholars program is to be the premier academic community for American University’s most ambitious student and alumni leaders dedicated to excellence, social justice, the sustainable advancement of under-resourced and underserved communities. Our mission is to elevate the intellectual curiosity, social responsibility, and success of enterprising students for post-baccalaureate education, impactful citizenship, and lifelong achievement. To this end, we have designed programs and established partnerships that precipitate a mutually respectful learning community where our students and alumni share in a greater purpose to develop to their full potential; to contribute to the intellectual, social, and political environment of the institution; to proactively prepare for graduate and professional school; and to address the world’s most pressing economic, environmental, and social challenges.
While we encourage all students to apply, the most successful applicants will have a minimum SAT 1150 or ACT of 25. Successful applicants will receive full tuition, room, board, books, and fees.
*** FDDS are required to maintain a 3.2 cumulative GPA.
