What: Office of Personal Management Webcast: The Importance of Retirement Security
When: Wednesday, February 27th (2:00 PM - 3:30 PM)
It is our goal that through this panel discussion and webcast we will help to invigorate the conversation about retirement savings behavior, highlight practices to promote savings behavior, and raise awareness of the magnitude of savings disparities across racial and ethnic groups.
The panel and webcast has been promoted to a diverse and broad audience including 12,000 Office of Personal Management subscribers, Department of Interior and Government Services Administration employees, and local chapters and national leadership of Blacks in Government.
Format/Program:
- John Hope Bryant, Founder, Chairman & CEO, Operation HOPE Introductory remarks with a focus on financial literacy and inclusion as the next civil rights priority.
- Raymond Kirk, Manager, Benefits Officers Training and Development, Office of Personnel Management
- Wilhelmina Leigh, Ph.D., Senior Research Associate, Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies Will provide a broader framework on the political and economic landscape in which we discuss retirement security.
- Ellen Chube, Vice President, Chief of Staff to the Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, Ariel Investments Will discuss gender and racial disparities in retirement savings and highlight the findings of the Ariel/Aon Hewitt “401(k) Plans in Living Color” study and survey. This will include statistics on African-American savings and the importance of saving today for a dignified retirement.
- Valerie Rawlston Wilson, Vice President, Research, National Urban League Policy Institute Will discuss economic empowerment as the next civil rights priority and the importance of prioritizing retirement savings among other immediate economic challenges for communities of color.
