After nearly 77 years, Social Security remains one of the nation’s most successful antipoverty programs. In 2010, Social Security kept over 20 million people out of poverty, including 1.1 million children. Although the rules for determining Social Security benefits are the same for everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity or gender, African Americans uniquely benefit from the family-oriented structure of the program based on certain characteristics. For example, nearly half (47%) of all African-American Social Security beneficiaries receive benefits for something other than retirement. This compares to only 28% of whites.
This brochure provides some basic facts about the Social Security program and why it is important to African American workers and their families. Some additional resources for getting more detailed information are also provided.
