Urban League Jobs Chat – This Friday, June 1st

On Friday, June 1 the Bureau of Labor Statistics will release its national employment statistics for May 2012.  Key things to look for will include any indication that the economy is rebounding from its spring hiring slump and whether the unemployment rate is trending toward falling below that critical 8% mark as we head into the 2012 presidential election.  The economy needs to generate at least 250,000 new jobs per month for the best chances of bringing the unemployment rate down to 7.9% by October (assuming little increase in labor force participation).   Read NULPI's analysis of the May employment numbers in our May 2012 Monthly Employment Report, available Friday, June 1 at www.iamempowered.com.

Join Dr. Valerie Rawlston Wilson, economist at the National Urban League, for a live online discussion of the employment situation, and what it means for the economy and the community.  Friday, June 1, 2012 from 2-3pm EDT. Click here for more information.

Obama Administration Strengthens Efforts to Investigate & Prosecute Fraud in Mortgage-Backed Securities

The Justice Department last week announced plans to augment the resources of the Residential Mortgage-Backed Securities (RMBS) Working Group, which is charged with identifying, investigating and prosecuting fraudulent financial practices in the mortgage banking industry.

While many policy makers sought to hold the everyday borrower to a higher standard of responsibility, the Urban League has long advocated for a mechanism to bring to justice those who helped drive the mortgage-based securities crisis.

NUL applauded the Obama Administration for devoting much-needed attention and resources to the fight against the abusive and fraudulent behavior that lit the fuse and fanned the flames of the residential mortgage crisis in America.
