ALEC Poised to Come Out Against Common Core State Standards

Last week ALEC, the conservative group that is behind the Stand Your Ground laws around the country, held one of its policy meetings. During the meeting they were to vote on two key resolutions that come out against the implementation of the Common Core State Standards. The group pushed back the vote on these resolutions to “tighten” language.
 
Common Core is an important step forward to raising math and reading standards in our nation. 45 states and the District of Columbia have adopted these standards, which were developed by states in an effort led by the National Governor’s Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers. Urban League affiliates in Tennessee and Pennsylvania are taking input from other civil rights organizations and are working to ensure these standards are implemented. Given ALEC’s influence in state legislatures the National Urban League Policy Institute will be monitoring this issue.
