USA Today: Zimmerman arraigned, enters plea in Trayvon Martin case
George Zimmerman, who shot and killed Trayvon Martin, was arraigned at 1:30 p.m. today in a Florida courtroom.
Update at 3:30 p.m. ET: Zimmerman's not-guilty plea was accepted during his arraignment, MSNBC reports. Seminole County Judge Kenneth R. Lester set Zimmerman's next court date for 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 8. At that "docket sounding", a trial date will be set unless Zimmerman's attorney asks for another continuance, according to the news station.
Update at noon ET: Zimmerman's lawyer, Mark O'Mara, filed a motion to have more time to ready his defense and a waiver of a speedy trial, according to court documents. Zimmerman needs "additional time to prepare" and realizes this may prolong his case, the papers day.
Original Post: Neither Zimmerman, his lawyer Mark O'Mara, nor lawyers from the prosecution will attend the arraignment hearing in Sanford.
