Don’t expect Mayor Holly Brinda to throw on a pair of khaki shorts, grab a whistle and play the part of camp counselor.
The city’s elected leader is happy enough just to be able to announce new summer camp opportunities for Elyria kids that is shaping up to be a first-time partnership between the city, Elyria Schools, Lorain 
“This is a joint commitment between so many to make it possible to get kids active this summer and off of the streets,” Mayor Brinda said. “We are still working out the details, but I am excited to give this a try and see what happens.”
So far, the idea is to gear one camp toward 6- to 12-year-olds, with Elyria Schools and the kids’ teachers working on a curriculum based on the environment and science. A second camp will be geared toward 13- to 17-year-old at-risk boys and will be a combination basketball and leadership camp.
The camps will be held at the city recreation centers and the Cascade Park Nature Center. Brinda said funding has also been provided to allow for some busing from neighborhoods without open swimming pools to the recreation centers with open pools this summer — North and East.
“I’m really looking forward to the program,” Mayor Brinda said. “There are so many people that want to be engaged in our community and in our youth.”
