Prall Kids Enjoy Virtual Valentine's Day
Shelley Loo, communications specialist at Time Warner Cable, recounts that Valentine’s Day was celebrated at the firm’s Flatiron office by unlocking the mysteries behind wireless communications as part of its Cracking the Codes in the Wireless World curriculum with a group of middle school students from Prall Intermediate School through the New York Urban League (New York, New York) on Staten Island.
Students delved into the curriculum with the help of 16 staff volunteers from the information technology, communications, business services and human resources departments. The workshop activities demonstrated the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) that support cable television infrastructure and delivery.
Through engaging hands-on activities, students experienced the technologies behind the wireless products they encounter each day. Activities were organized into three areas: Create, Transmit and Connect. In Create, students explored different types of digital content, and the codes that keep it protected. In Transmit, participants modeled a home wireless network and strategized how to send information more efficiently over the network. In Connect, students experienced how multiple wireless technologies communicate and built a backhaul network to see how wireless depends on wired technologies.
“Time Warner Cable was excited to host students from Staten Island’s IS 27 through the New York Urban League to bring a hands-on opportunity for them to explore the science and technologies that deliver entertainment to our customers,” said John Quigley, Regional Vice President of Operations in New York City.
“Time Warner Cable’s partnership with the New York Urban League is a great example of our continued investment in the diverse communities in the New York City market area. Through our Connect A Million Minds initiative, we hope to inspire young people to look into how math and engineering make an impact in our everyday life.”
