Medicaid is an essential lifeline for one in seven Americans, but a recent report released by Families USA, the National Council of La Raza, the Urban league, and other civil rights and healthcare organizations describes how critically important it is for communities of color. Millions of seriously ill blacks and Latinos, as well as half of all black and Latino children count on Medicaid to get the care they need.
Blacks and Latinos in the United States disproportionately suffer from chronic diseases like asthma and diabetes. Cuts to Medicaid would put blacks and Latinos with serious health care needs at risk. They won't be able to get the care they need when they need it, they'll incur higher medical costs when they do get care, and they'll get sicker – putting them at risk of dying prematurely.
Yet the Congressional super committee is considering cuts to the program! That's right: Some members of Congress would rather see millions of Americans with chronic conditions go without affordable coverage than make billionaires and corporations pay their fair share of taxes.
Get involved in the fight to protect the Medicaid lifeline and the millions of Americans who depend on this vital program! It's easy to do, and it can make a big difference for people in your community. Just take one (or more) of the actions below.
Join our Twitter storm! | Between now and Friday, take a few minutes to send tweets to members of the super committee and sign our Twitter petition. Tell them we won't stand for Medicaid cuts, which disproportionately affect communities of color. |
Email Congress | Click here and send a quick email to your members of Congress. Tell them to reject Medicaid cuts and demand that they stop trying to balance the budget on the backs of people of color, especially children and the seriously ill. |
Tell-a-Friend | Help spread the word! Email ten friends and tell them to get involved. Congress needs to hear from more people that the Medicaid program is a priority. |
