How Are You Creating A 'Green' Tomorrow?

The Contest:
The current environmental challenges that we as a people, as a society, as a nation and as a global community are facing are HUGE and require solutions that are both BIG and small to solve. It will require input of one and all. And that’s where you come in.
The National Urban League (NUL) is committed to tackling the challenges that we all face in this area. Moreover, we know that some of the best and freshest solutions will come from young citizens like you.
We would like you (NUL’s up and coming generation of the movement) to participate in a video contest, sending us a video of your “green” solution.
We are seeking video submissions of up to 3 minutes in length demonstrating an effort or initiative you started in your community or school to improve the environment or tackle pollution.
This contest is co-sponsored by American Electric Power Foundation, based in Columbus, Ohio.
Eligibility
- Submissions for the first year of this contest are limited to students that are permanent residents in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
- You must be enrolled in an Urban League Education and Youth Development Program (such as NULITES) or a youth program approved by the CEO of the Urban League Affiliate in your community.

Videos must show how young people can and are taking action to make the world -- and their own communities -- a better place.The subject of your video can be about, but not limited to, one of the following items relating to advancing the green movement:
- Reducing my carbon footprint (via thoughtful shopping choices, transportation choices etc.)
- Teaching people about possible new and renewable sources of energy
- Starting a campaign or petition drive promoting saving/ conserving energy (current sources – gasoline, natural gas, electricity, etc.)
- Practical ways to incorporate new/ alternative or renewable sources of energy into people’s daily lives
- Practical ways to incorporate improving energy efficiency around the home
- Increasing and promoting recycling
- Promoting ways people can eat more “local” healthy foods
- Starting a community garden
- Participating in local food co-ops
- Any science project relating to a green and sustainable environment
Any children of employees of National Urban League, the Urban League Affiliate (Tulsa, Oklahoma) and AEP or its affiliates are ineligible to participate in the contest.
Video Submissions
There will be two rounds to the contest. During the first round, participants can enter by uploading their videos. Videos will be vetted by an Urban League Green Team Panel prior to going live on IAmEmpowered.com. Members of the IAmEmpowered.com community will be invited to vote for the best video submission. The three videos with the highest combination of votes and judges' scoring will move on to the second round.
The winning video will be a part of the official "How are You Creating a Green Tomorrow" video contest public service announcement, broadcast on Iamempowered.com and the winner will receive a scholarship of $4,500 to an accredited 4-year college or university.
The Criteria
- Videos must show how young people can and are taking action to make the world -- and their own communities -- a better place.
- Videos must capture the mission of "How Are You Creating A 'Green' Tomorrow?" - to give a voice to young people about “green challenges.”
- All videos must be up to and no longer than 3 minutes.
- Participants must be a junior or senior in high school.
- Group submissions are prohibited.
- Each individual is limited to one submission.
- All videos should be free of copyrighted materials.

How to Enter
To upload a video, you must register with IAmEmpowered.com to create your profile. Upload your video on the contest page. Videos accepted by the Urban League Green Team Panel will be published and voted on by the IAmEmpowered community.
- Each video should be submitted with: your name(s), age(s), postal address, an email address, telephone number and title of the video.
- Short listed entries may be required to submit master copies of broadcast quality via surface/air mail on a DVcam tape.
Prizes will be awarded according to standards of journalism, visual storytelling, creativity, the viability of the solution proposed and video production techniques.
How to Vote
Once you have registered with IAmEmpowered.com, you will be able to vote for the videos you like. A user is allowed one vote per video by clicking on the "vote" button. You can vote for as many videos as you like. You cannot vote for your own video.
