This AARP Public Policy Institute fact sheet highlights the employment situation for older persons as of June 2011.
Nonfarm payroll employment showed almost no growth in June. Between May and June, the unemployment rate for persons aged 55 and older rose from 6.8 percent to 7.0 percent, exactly where it was at the official end of the recession two years earlier. More than 2.1 million people aged 55 or older were unemployed in June, 60,000 more than in May.
The average duration of unemployment for jobseekers aged 55 and older fell slightly in June but still exceeded one year. As of June, 54.5 percent of older jobseekers had been out of work for 27 or more weeks, also down slightly from the month before.
