National HIV Testing Day (NHTD), June 27, is an annual observance to promote HIV testing
The National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA) founded the day in 1995 and continues to be the lead for this observance.
This year National HIV Testing Day falls between two major dates:
- June 5, 2011 - 30 years since the CDC’s MMWR reported the first cases of AIDS; and,
- July 13, 2011 - the one year anniversary of the release of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy.
This is a particularly important time for YOU to get involved! Take the Test, Take Control.

We are partnering with CDC on the Act Against AIDS Leadership Initiative to reach our communities with life-saving HIV prevention messages.
In its first year, AAALI partners have:
- Coordinated more than 1,400 outreach events attended by more than 230,000 people
- Engaged nearly 400 local affiliates across the across the country in HIV prevention activities
- Reached millions with critical HIV prevention messages through conferences, advertisements and media stories, generating approximately 270 million media impressions
We can’t afford to be complacent about HIV — this disease is still serious and deadly.
African Americans, Latinos and gay and bisexual men are the groups hardest hit by HIV in this country.
- Blacks — The rate of new infections among blacks is seven times that of whites
- Latinos — The rate of new infections among Latinos is three times the rate among whites
- MSM — Although MSM make up approximately 4 percent of males in U.S., 13 and older, the HIV diagnosis rate among this population is more than 40 times that of other men
