National Urban League
Declares "War on Unemployment" in New England
While the National Unemployment Rate is 9% as of April 2011, the unemployment rate for African Americans is 16.1% and Hispanics is 11.8%.
As an ongoing effort to address the rising rate of unemployment in urban communities the National Urban League has declared a “War on Unemployment”.

As part of the “War on Unemployment”, the National Urban League is conducting jobs tours with the next stop in New England to promote the League’s 12-Point Jobs Rebuild America Plan. The New England Jobs Tour will be in Boston where the League will announce its upcoming Annual Conference to be held in the city, July 27-30th. The National Urban League will engage community leaders in dialogue and visit Urban League affiliate offices on the tour.
The five Urban League affiliate offices on the New England “JOBS TOUR” stop include:
-
Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts
(Darnell L. Williams, CEO)
-
Urban League of Rhode Island
(Dennis B. Langley, CEO)
-
Urban League of Springfield
(Henry M. Thomas III, CEO)
-
Urban League of Greater Hartford
(Adrienne W. Cochrane, CEO)
-
Urban League of Southern Connecticut
(Valarie Schultz-Wilson, CEO)
“New England’s communities have been hard-hit by the recession and the continuing unemployment crisis” says, National Urban League President and CEO, Marc Morial. “I anticipate hearing from individuals and community leaders on how we can advocate, on the local and national level, for policies that address the communities most affected and help put Urban America back to work."
Introduced earlier this year, the Jobs Rebuild America Plan offers a dozen dynamic and imaginative measures to both rescue those most profoundly affected by the ongoing economic emergency, while also remedying many of the underlying causes behind the recession’s inordinate and seemingly-amplified impact on the communities served by Urban League affiliates. In addition to developing the Jobs Rebuild America Plan, the National Urban League is also supporting the Urban Jobs Act of 2011. Click here for more information on the Urban Jobs Act of 2011. The Urban Jobs Act has been sponsored by members of both the House and the Senate.
In support of the Urban Jobs Act of 2011, the National Urban League launched an Urban Jobs Act Advocacy Campaign to gain public support for the proposed legislation. Click here to send your letter of support to your representatives today!
“Jobs Rebuild America” is also the theme of this year’s National Urban League Annual Conference, which will be held in Boston July 27-30.
