AREVA White Paper: ‘Recycling Provides Strategic Flexibility and Long-Term Confidence’
BETHESDA, Md., May 13, 2011 – “The deployment of proven state-of-the-art recycling technology is cost competitive, simplifies waste management, and conserves natural resources,” according to a white paper issued today by AREVA on building a sustainable nuclear fuel cycle.
The Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future holds today its final public meeting before issuing its draft recommendations for managing used nuclear fuel. With more than 60,000 metric tons of used fuel stored at U.S. reactor sites and increased public concern regarding nuclear energy, many are looking for leadership in addressing America’s fuel cycle policies.
As the global leader in nuclear energy technology, AREVA has decades of experience safely and effectively recycling used fuel for customers around the globe. AREVA has performed detailed studies showing that deployment of recycling technology would increase energy security, create jobs and investment, and would not increase electricity costs.
The white paper issued today shows that recycling “boosts public acceptance of nuclear energy while retaining sufficient flexibility to incorporate longer-term technology developments, such as Generation IV reactors.” In addition, it concludes that “local public support for a recycling center is likely to prove a significant factor in the ability to gain acceptance for proposed interim used fuel storage facilities.”
“Recycling is a proven solution that conserves natural resources, simplifies waste management and is cost competitive. We must think beyond just temporary storage and permanent disposal – recycling is an essential part of building a more sustainable fuel cycle,” said David Jones, senior vice president of AREVA Inc.
