We Did It!
There’s great news for everybody who joined us to tell the U.S. Department of Agriculture to implement improved nutrition standards in public schools. People showed up by the busload to tell the agency to pass the standards. In fact, if everybody who commented showed up to the USDA together, it would take 2,760 school buses to carry us all.
Nearly 140,000 people wrote to the USDA asking the agency to pass standards that would require school meals to include more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and other nutritious items, and fewer unhealthy calories. That shatters our original goal of sending 50,000 comments to the agency, an effort that surely will be an important step in helping the 23 million American kids who are overweight or obese.
Thanks to everybody who joined this important movement-wide push, including our friends at PreventObesity.net, the Kids’ Safe and Healthful Foods Project, American Heart Association, Jamie Oliver Foundation, Center for Science in the Public Interest, MomsRising and the National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity. We’ll post an update once the USDA makes its final decision about implementing the new standards.
In the interim, stay updated and connected here on Iamempowered.com!
