How best to accelerate the nation’s economic recovery to benefit disproportionately impacted urban communities was the debate Tuesday as more than 500 local business and community leaders turned out for the Chicago Urban League’s annual summit.
“The recession is not over. I don’t care what they say in Washington, D.C.,” Mayor Daley told the audience at the Chicago Hilton & Towers, echoing the theme shared by other participants and by keynote speaker Marc Morial, president of the National Urban League, in one of Daley’s last such civic addresses.
Morial, a former mayor of New Orleans, initiated hearty applause for Daley, whom he said history will record “right at the top” of the nation’s great leaders of urban communities.
