March 23, 2011 marks the one-year anniversary since passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Once all parts of the law are implemented and enforced, this critical tool for nationwide health reform will provide coverage to millions of uninsured Americans and take significant steps to address longstanding health disparities present in communities of color.

Just as we were committed one year ago to the passage of this historic legislation, the National Urban League will continue to advocate for full implementation of the law and protect pre-existing conditions protections, prescription drug cost reductions, and expanded coverage for children and young adults.

  • The Affordable Care Act will expand coverage and affordability for all communities, especially communities of color that have historically lacked access to insurance.
  • Beginning in 2014, the Affordable Care Act will provide all Americans access to affordable coverage that cannot be taken away from them due to an illness or injury.
  • The law will provide coverage for children and young adults under the age of 26.
  • The Affordable Care Act will cover no cost preventive health care.
  • The new law will help to eliminate health disparities and promote health equity.

Join us in celebrating this first step of many to create a more affordable and just health care system.
