URBAN LEAGUE HONORS 13 GRADUATES
The Urban League of Northwest Indiana honored 13 high school graduates Friday at the annual scholarship presentation at the Diamond Center adjacent to the U.S. Steel Yard.
Not only were they treated to a free night of RailCats baseball, but prior to the game, they walked away with free financial assistance from various individuals and agencies in Northwest Indiana.
We are here to celebrate some of our 2011 high school graduates,” Urban League president and CEO Vanessa Allen said. “Time has definitely flown for these young people. From kindergarten to high school graduates who are leaving home and heading off to college, isn’t it a wonderful thing?”
Allen said the recipients earned their scholarships after submitting essays that were read by Era Twyman of the Gary Literacy Coalition and a committee from the Urban League. Some students walked off with $1,000 scholarships, others with $500 scholarships.
