ULGA hosted a tobacco usage informational in the Peachtree Center Mall food court during peak lunch hour time, the day before Kick Butts Day. Kick Butts Day is another CVS Health sponsored campaign focused on getting youth to quit smoking. We pasted out brochures and asked smokers to at least consider ‘kicking butts’ for 24-hours. Even with little time to prepare, this may have been one of the best-attended outreach
The Urban League of Greater Atlanta held it's first Smoke Cessation group at Adamsville Green Senior Housing Residence with 11 participants. Through the support of the management Mercy Housing who has recently gone Smoke-Free at this facility, many attendees expressed interest. Although this was not specifically an Empowered To Quit presentation, it was uplifting to see our President highlighting the impact and results we all work to achieve, whether through work, education, or health.
Urban League of Greater Atlanta Helps Members Get Smoke Free
On February 2, 2017, Nancy Flake Johnson, President of ULGA, presented the programs and services offered to communities throughout Greater Atlanta. Although this was not specifically an Empowered To Quit presentation, it was uplifting to see our President highlighting the impact and results we all work to achieve, whether through work, education, or health.
Julian, 18 years old, was 8 weeks pregnant when she enrolled in Project Wellness. Julian did not have medical insurance or a medical provider when enrolled in the program. Urban League staff was able to work with the staff at the maternity shelter to ensure that she obtained Medicaid through assisting her with the application process and providing her with a list of prenatal doctors in her area.
Empowered to Quit
Empowered to Quit is a new Urban League program that will deliver tobacco prevention and cessation services to adults in Atlanta, Philadelphia, and D.C. The goal of Empowered to Quit is to implement effective strategies that more aggressively address smoking and tobacco use among African-Americans and build healthier communities.
